The master of the Kifune family. A landlord.
He’s often praised by everyone to be kind, but he simply holds no interest in others. If he were to categorize the people of this world, they would be separated into “the heroine”, “himself” and “everybody else”.
He thinks his half-brother, Sousuke, as pitiful and is rather attached to him, but feelings for Sousuke are nothing more than what one would feel towards a dog that they’re raising rather than towards another human being.
He refers to the heroine as “my lady”.

Kazuomi’s little brother who was born to a different mother. He’s attending university with the financial assistance provided by the Kifune family. The illegitimate child between the previous Kifune family head and his concubine (a geiko).
He was taken in by the Kifune family after the passing of his birth mother when he was young. However, conscious of their family’s reputation, Kazuomi’s grandfather instead passed Sousuke on to the Nittas, who are a merchant family.
Though feeling as if he was betraying his half-brother, he chose happiness with the heroine and eloped.
A calm and kind man who is a little puppy-like. Although modest, he holds strength at his core.
He refers to the heroine as “Your Highness”.

The lady of a certain earl, whose family is in decline. Kazuomi and Sousuke’s childhood friend.
Thinking of Kazuomi as nothing more than an elder brother, she decided to elope with her secret lover Sousuke on the eve of her wedding despite the difference in their standings.
Though they were poor, the both of them led a very happy life for the most fleeting of moments, but it was instantly crushed when Kazuomi caught up to them.
Her life raised in difficulty the moment her parents promised her hand in marriage to Kazuomi.

貴船家の当主。大地主。
外面がよく万人に優しいと思われているが、実際は他人に興味がないだけ。世の中の人間をわけるなら、ヒロインと自分とその他大勢。
異母弟の草介のことはそれなりに可哀想だと思っているし、愛着もあるが、人間というより飼い犬に対するような感情で接している。
ヒロインのことは「お嬢さん」と呼んでいる。

一臣の腹違いの弟で、貴船家の援助で大学に通っている。貴船家の前当主が妾(芸妓)に産ませた庶子。
母親が亡くなったことにより、十歳の頃、貴船本家に引き取られる。しかし外聞を気にした一臣の祖父によって、商人である新田家に養子に出される。
ヒロインとは相思相愛の仲で、異母兄を裏切る罪悪感を抱えながらも、彼女と幸せになることを選び、駆け落ち。
穏やかで優しい性格のわんこ系。控えめながら、芯の強さを併せ持つ。
ヒロインのことは「お姫(ひい)さま」と呼んでいる。


◆ヒロイン

やや没落気味な某伯爵家のお嬢さま。一臣・草介とは幼なじみ。
婚約者の一臣のことは兄としか思えず、挙式前夜、ひそかに身分違いの愛をはぐくんでいた草介と駆け落ち。
貧しくも幸せな生活を送っていたが、束の間の逃避行は、一臣によって瞬く間に壊される。
